Description
López de Heredia is Rioja's most famously traditional house, and Viña Tondonia is its signature single vineyard, on calcareous soils in a meander of the Ebro near Haro. The 2013 Reserva is 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha and 5% each of Graciano and Mazuelo. It was fermented with indigenous yeasts in old oak vats and aged at least six years in old American oak, then bottled unfiltered in November 2021 and released about 12 years after harvest.
The cool, rainy 2013 vintage produced a fine-boned, energetic Tondonia. Expect dried roses, tar, red and black fruit, mushroom, truffle, cedar and spice, with very fine tannins and a vibrant, layered finish. It is drinking now, with decades ahead.
