M. Graillot Domaine Equis Crozes Hermitage 'Domaine des Lises' 2021 750ml
There are few names as esteemed in the Northern Rhône as Graillot. In 1985, the legendary Alain Graillot, after working with Jacques Seysses at Domaine Dujac, returned to his home in Crozes-Hermitage to establish his own domaine. With each passing year, his dedication to crafting exceptional Syrah has garnered a devoted following worldwide. Consequently, it seems a daunting challenge for Alain's child to follow in the footsteps of such a towering figure. Fortunately for us and the wine community, Alain's eldest son, Maxime Graillot, not only continued his father's legacy but also carved out his own path in winemaking excellence.
Maxime trained under his father from a young age. In 2004, he decided to divide his time between his father's domaine and starting his own namesake winery. Understanding where the finest land in the Rhône lay, he acquired parcels adjacent to Domaine Alain Graillot, as well as parcels in the heart of the original Saint-Joseph and Cornas regions. He converted the previously conventionally farmed vineyards to organic farming, which involved constant plowing of the soils (allowing the roots to penetrate deeply into the gravel) and banning herbicides. The results were remarkable from the outset. While Maxime's wines share the exuberance and expressiveness of his father's, they tend to possess a bit more fruit power—likely a result of Maxime using around 30% whole cluster compared to 100% at Domaine Alain Graillot. His wines exhibit an effortless grace and charm that have become hallmarks of the Graillot style. Any lover of Northern Rhône wines owes it to themselves to uncork a bottle and enjoy the warm embrace of pure Syrah bliss.
